PRODUCTION OF POST-MODERN LANDSCAPE IN URBAN CHINA: A CASE STUDY OF GRAFFITI IN GUANGZHOU

Abstract:Graffiti were introduced into China after the Reform and Opening, and have gradually developed into urban landscapes blending the east and west. Different from the western graffiti (closely related to crime and politics), Chinese graffiti are mainly individual expressions and artistic creations. Existing in urban public space, graffiti reflect multiple actors' conflicts, competition and cooperation because of the dual feature as rebellious and artistic. The on-site surveys and interviews were conducted from the middle of 2015 to the end of 2016. It is found that the development of graffiti in Guangzhou had undergone three stages in the background of urban spatial evolution and urban strategy adjustments since the 1990s. From the 1990s to 2006, graffiti works, crews, activities and websites appeared in central areas of Guangzhou for the first time, and flourished in this period. But after 2010, the urban management was not so strict as the previous years so that graffiti writers came back to the central area in the city. And their works clustered in Yuexiu, Tianhe and Liwan District and gradually expanded to surrounding areas. In recent years, social networking platforms helped to strengthen graffiti writers' social interaction. As a result, Graffiti, which represent one of the postmodern culture elements in cities, have formed the local characteristics in China.
